PHILLIPS BROOKThe first vines on Phillips Brook were established in 1975 making them some of the oldest vines in the renowned Great Southern region of Western Australia. Situated in the Albany sub region, boasting gravelly loam soils and north facing slopes with stunning views to the Porongurup range, Phillips Brook produces sophisticated and elegant wines displaying the flavours and intensity associated with a cool climate area.THE PEOPLEIn 2001, Bronwen and David Newbury, with their three children, moved back to Western Australia from Bourke in outback New South Wales, where they had lived for many years. Albany was the obvious place to look to settle, with its pristine coastal landscapes, clean air, unspoilt beaches, and many happy holiday memories from years gone by. As luck would have it, Albany’s oldest commercial vineyard was for sale at the time of their arrival. It didn’t take long for their minds to be made up before the Newbury’s took it on and rejuvenated the old vines back to top condition. As well as looking after the old vines, new vines were planted allowing a more diverse range of varieties. David has built a cellar sales area in the old shearing shed, using the old sheep yard timbers and other preloved and rustic materials. The cellar door allows the wines to be tasted publicly and also functions as a studio/gallery for Bronwen’s painting. All are welcome to drop in to taste some wines and view some art.THE ARTBronwen Newbury has been painting professionally for around twenty years, and has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions around Australia, and has received many awards over the years. Best known for her landscape paintings, her work is highly influenced by her experiences in the Australian outback, which are often captured in her large acrylic pieces. More recently, with the move to Albany there is a definite influence from the coastal landscapes and vineyard scenes which surround her daily. |
